Ladies the ocean is ginormous, and deep, and salty, and giant submarine eating squids live there AND only crazy people "do" ocean cruises.
While we agree that Ocean cruises are wonderful - there are some key AND ginormous differences between ocean and river cruising. Yep, size matters. River cruise vessels are built to slowly navigate the worlds meandering rivers. They can dock in storybook locations, sail under centuries old bridges and squeeze through small locks. Most river cruise ships hold an average of 150 people (some much less). All of this means - you got it - they are small. Unlike ocean cruises which offer guests a wide array of onboard entertainment, and can host hundreds to thousands of passengers, river cruises are not built that way. River cruises are very destination focused with local guides who help travelers experience - and connect with - the world around them. Most river cruise itineraries sail off the beaten path where you can really experience your destination. On a river cruise you are not at sea and you don't get seasick. Instead river cruises wind and bend through the heart of fascinating countries providing a panoramic view of the old world. You are always within a few feet of the shore. Every day and night you have easy access to ports-of-call, local hosts, and immersive experiences. River ships almost always dock right in the very heart of villages, towns and cities. All you have to do is walk off the boat and see - not sea. Rather than traveling to countries, river cruises travel through countries! If you want to explore multiple destinations, comfortably in one vacation this is the way to go! River cruises are primarily a European thing, although there are also great Nile, Asian (Mekong), M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I and now Columbian (Magdalena) River options. They are largely favorites of the 50ish and up crowd, with exceptions give or take (ask us). We like to think of River Cruising as checking into an upscale hotel, where you unpack once, and experience the world while the ship moves from one destination to the next. These "hotels" also include fabulous culturally relevant dining and included excursions to help you find your way. These ships move from city to city with plenty of meaningful opportunities to explore. These adventures are ideal for curious people who love to learn and are interested in destinations and local culture. Immerse yourself in the Old or New World as you sail the world's rivers. Discover Danube gems like Vienna and Budapest. See storied Rhine castles. Trace French history along the Seine, Rhone or Saone. From the Main to the Moselle, the Dour

What makes AMA Waterways stand out from other river cruise options? Definitely #1are the INCLUDED excursions. All excursions on AMA are included! That's right - the "good" excursions don't cost extra. And there are many excursion options to choose from. On my last AMA adventure I enjoyed excursions in the morning and afternoon on some days. Boy was I pooped out at the end of the day. #2 is the sip and sail hour. All beer and wine is included with your meals. But one hour before dinner you may enjoy cocktails, wine, beer and champagne. There really is no need for a "drink package". If you'd like a nightcap before bed the cost is very reasonable. AMA is not about nickel and diming you. #3 are the pre and post excursions where your cruise manager (not some random tour company) is your guide! Reach out and let's book an AMA cruise.
Viking River Cruises is the largest purveyor of river cruises and therefore have the largest number of ships and itineraries. They are top tier, offer a very fine product. If you don't have a lot of flexibility in travel times you can likely find a sailing with Viking. They are adult only. Basic excursions are included in your fare. However, some "fancier" excursions do come with an extra charge. Although we do feel they represent a good value if you choose to purchase them. Viking includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner. Cocktails can be purchased or you may purchase a drink package that includes cocktails. Due to it's longstanding #1 spot as a premier river cruise provider, Viking often has access to the best docking positions and provides some of the best tour guides and onboard talent. Their ships are Scandinavian in design and therefore have a very "minimalist" aesthetic. They offer standard rooms (least expensive), french balcony and veranda staterooms as well as larger luxury suites. Optional Viking land packages can be purchased as an add on for before or after your cruise.
